Fusion Gypsies

France already relies heavily on nuclear energy, much more than the United States, but now they're pushing the boundaries of nuclear technology, trying to be the first to make fusion a reality. Of course many have tried and failed ... so it's an open question whether this attempt is any different. but it's interesting nonetheless

Replacing Transit with 5 Light Bulbs

Chicken Little Makes Policy: "Global warming" has become the latest weapon of the anti-automobile crowd. This may be best illustrated in Montreal, where public officials and the local media object to virtually every road improvement and suburban development on the basis of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Never mind that Environment Canada data shows automobile GHG to be so small that if all Canadians gave up their cars and began walking tomorrow, the nation would still fall far short of meeting its Kyoto agreements. High Gasoline Prices—What the Government Can Do

In an effort to deal with—or be seen as dealing with—high gasoline prices, President Bush called upon Congress to "find a way to approve permits to build new refineries a year after they are filed." In addition, Bush noted that he had "told the Environmental Protection Agency to use 'all available authority to grant waivers that would relieve critical fuel shortages,' and said he would seek more waiver authority from Congress if needed." Both quotes are from a brief Reuters story on the subject.
